Coaching is about transforming life.
When we experience grief and loss, exposure to secondary trauma and the daily micro griefs from watching human tragedy on the news and hearing of someone else’s suffering, we may not notice how this can change us. For those that work in direct patient care, emergency response and law enforcement, grief is something experienced as part of the job. But do we pay attention to it or put it at arm’s length? Do we ignore our humanity and call it “professional distance”, while ignoring the moral injury? We all want to see the best in humanity, but being on the front line of health care, emergency response and law enforcement doesn’t afford seeing “the best”. It takes deliberate and proactive effort on our part to allow professional distance (often avoidance of paying attention to the moral injury) to serve as a true change agent in our lives. As professionals we also experience personal loss and grief, which we are susceptible to also putting off to the side.
Grief coaching helps you to make changes that are meaningful for you, to connect with your own humanity, to develop ways to progress through grief in healthy ways without avoiding it or ignoring it. Grief coaching allows you to be witnessed without being judged for all the feelings that come with experiencing moral injury and grief. Having a grief coach takes the feeling of being alone out and supports you while you transition through your grief, loss and change. A grief coach can be a powerful support as you make meaning from your experience.
I am here to journey along side you through the grief, provide you with insight, and help you to locate the healing possibilities as well as potential dangers ahead as you grow as a professional in your chosen work. More importantly, I am here to journey with you as you learn to honor your grief without feeling as though you must trade your professionalism for your humanity. You will discover your capacity to balance life, honor your grief, and making meaning.
As someone who has experienced, healed and made meaning from significant griefs in my life, I provide you with the compassionate presence throughout your coaching process. Grief coaching is my art and my way of promoting life and healing.
Since grief can often have a lot of depth and many variables, I can help to illuminate various pathways and inner resources that you can use throughout your life and career. We will work together to explore what you want from life one step at a time.
What Grief Coaching is not…
Grief coaching is not an eraser for the loss that has occurred. A grief coach cannot change the past, nor answer questions that have no ability to be answered such as “why” questions. Grief coaching cannot resolve addictions, abusive relationship issues, violent crime, or complex grief. In such cases, you will be referred to a mental health professional or license therapist who is better able to assist you. Grief coaching promotes normal transition through grief and loss, while looking ahead at life. There is no evidence that a person actually “gets over grief” or if they are “just strong”, then the grief will disappear. Grief is about choosing the next steps without denying the loss. By choosing the next steps and developing a plan, you choose not to carry the weight of grief with you, but instead carry the wisdom and the memories learned from the grief. Grief coaching is for creating your life after the grief and loss.
The Coaching Process is designed to help you access your internal strengths, instincts, and wisdom to assist you in restoring your life’s momentum.
As your coach I provide a non-judgmental space where together, we can focus on helping you to:
· Identify the assumptions and thoughts that have interfered with life goals and dreams
· Create a vision for the future
· Design an action plan to accomplish that vision, helping you to turn from negative mindsets towards new possibilities.
With each step forward, you will connect with your life long friend “you” in a way that is mindful and compassionate.
